Simon Paul is without doubt one of the busiest men in the music industry. Not only is Simon an outstanding DJ, he is also the man behind the chart-topping Lost Witness with his productions being played by the likes of Tiesto, Judge Jules and M.I.K.E and being released on leading record labels such as Ministry of Sound, Nebula, Pulsive, Gusto, Monster, actr, Riot Recordings, and World of Trance which he’s the A&R and owner of. It is therefore assured that through Si’s own hard work and affiliations in the music industry, his sets will feature the most innovative and upfront productions direct from his studio and the studio’s of other prolific producers. Unlike most other producers though, Simon is a DJ first and foremost and has been for over 15 years. Si has played at guest spots all across the UK as well as establishing a high international status. He has toured Japan, notably playing at the famous "MANIAC LOVE" in Tokyo, along with the huge Red Raw festival in Melbourne Docks Australia, the Temple and Orbit in Hannover, the Bunker in Rio De Janeiro, and Atmosfear in Estonia. And on top of Si’s already busy schedule he is the new resident at Syndicate in Bristol, Park End in Oxford and at Out of the Blue in Manchester !
Si started Djing at the tender age of 14 scratch-mixing and in the late 1980's back to back with former UK mixing champion Chad Jackson, but soon fell for the house groove. His career kicked off when started producing at the age of 16, writing for a year or so with Nick Bracegirdle who is better known as ‘Chicane’. His first record the ‘BY-Si’ EP was released in 1994 whilst working with Tomski, another artist on the Xtravanagza imprint! This then followed with 3 record deals with Sun Up, releasing - ‘How I Feel’, ‘Can u You Feel It’, and ‘Cherokee’.
In 1997 Simon was asked to manage UK leading hard house label Tidy Trax, then still in its infancy, which is where he met his engineer Simon Kemper. At that point, Si Paul was very much into hard house and that is when he decided to do something a bit more ambient, yet still housey. In 1999 he produced ‘Happiness Happening’ and ‘Red Sun Rising’ and had the foresight to commission remixes by Lange which turned the tracks into 2 of the biggest trance anthems of that year, and is regarded by many people in the scene as true classics..
Following the trends year in, year out, Simon's sets feature heavily on uplifting Dutch house to trance, through to hard house and progressive grooves - a combination guaranteed to rock any night. He used to promote and DJ at his own night called "WALLOP" alongside Judge Jules, Tall Paul, Brandon Block and a host of the nations talent, as well as holding residencies elsewhere for over 10 years. Simon has played at guest spots all across the UK and has toured in Japan, notably playing at the famous "MANIAC LOVE" in Tokyo, along with the huge Red Raw festival in Melbourne Docks Australia as well as the Temple and Orbit in Hannover and the Bunker in Rio De Janeiro.
A little known fact is that he also the man responsible for the huge anthem "Fine Night" under the alias of "Dusk 'till Dawn", which amazingly featured on the Ministry Of Sound Annuals IV and Gatecrasher compilations, despite never being commercially released. Is there nothing this man can't do? He was also responsible for the amazing Coldplay bootleg of "Trouble", which saw plays from Judge Jules, Jo Whiley and Dave Pearce at Radio one, off only seven test pressings. A track that will remain the "number 1 that never was". Then there is Movers n Shakers signed to 23/7 "Ur Right On Time" a pumping house monster, as well as a new version of Fine Night called Another Fine Day which received support for Lawler and Tong off CD and ended up in both BUZZ and Coolcuts.
Always trying to keep his hand in, Si Paul set a management company called SPM which looked after the talents of Belgium’s Filterheadz and the UK's own D.Ramirez (with whom he had the VUDU label) amongst others. Always proactive, SPM set out its stall as a major intermediary for budding new artists and producers and has already had some notable success. In 2003 SPM was involved in signing the hugely successful XTM to Universal a single that went on to sell in excess of 195,000 copies in the UK, also involved with Angel City for Data with his songwriter producer Bruce Elliott-Smith who also wrote the Marrakech single for German million selling artist ATB. |
